This article addresses the importance of highlighting teachers' emotional labor within teacher education programs. Given the changing landscape of schools in the 21st century, teachers' emotional labor now includes participating in annual safety drills and lockdown trainings, in addition to responses to violence (threatened or actual). This study emerges out of a need to explore how this national context shapes teacher candidates' identity development and to consider how teacher education programs might better address this context. Employing Berry's (2007) framework of tensions within teaching practice, the paper offers a discourse analysis of a reflective journal entry written by a teacher candidate in response to the 2017 school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Arguing for the use of narrative inquiry within field experiences, the authors propose that teacher educators can help candidates develop more responsive and productive emotional practices by linking emotions to roles and relationships, using negative emotions to articulate purposes for teaching, and highlighting the emotional practices of experienced teachers.

The Role of Teachers and School Leaders in Mass Shootings and Multiple Victim Violence

There is an increased concern for school violence, particularly instances of mass shootings, which has led researchers to respond by examining both the causes and consequences of this behavior. What is often missing from the discussion on mass shootings in school settings, however, is the role of teachers and school leaders. Because these individuals are on the front line when school shootings occur, their ability to influence and enforce school policies must be taken into consideration. The mission of this chapter is to provide an overview of the vital role that teachers and school leaders play in mass shootings and incidents of multiple victim violence. This chapter is essential for any text exploring the issues surrounding mass shootings in school settings.

At a small rural middle school in the southern United States, two students murdered a teacher, four students, and injured 10 during a shooting spree. This case represents the lived experiences of a school principal, counselor, and community that survived the deadly rampage. The case highlights the challenges that school leaders may face such as making quick decisions, managing volunteers, and assisting faculty, staff, students, and parents in returning to a level of normalcy. Although the experience is based on a real event, all identifying information (i.e., location, names) has been masked with pseudonyms. The case encourages discussion and reflection among school leaders in responding to youth violence on school campuses.

Unfortunately, tragedies occur all around the world every day. It is perceived by many as particularly devastating when children are the victims of the tragedy. When these events do occur, the media is likely to cover them in part due to the innocence and vulnerability of the victims. In reading media accounts of tragedies involving children, we often hear stories of bravery and heroism on the part of teachers. Teachers’ images in the media are not always positive, but their capacity to serve as heroes can be seen in the coverage of these tragic events. Campbell discusses the hero monomyth in terms of separation, initiation, and return. In this vein, we look at the stories of hero teachers before, during, and after two specific incidents in order to conduct a comparative, cross-cultural study. We consider two tragic incidents in two different countries—the sinking of the Sewol ferry in South Korea in 2014 and the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida,...
